The Rugfest organisers are delighted to bring yet another year of simply brilliant musical entertainment – Punching way above weight Rugfest is turning into the kind of festival that everyone wants to play – Here are the bands so far ! but more excitement is yet to be added !!
Charly Coombes and the New Breed are an indie rock and roll band with a generous sprinkle of soul, fronted by singer/songwriter Charly Coombes. Charly has been writing and performing for years with various bands and musicians, including indie-blues band 22-20s. As the younger of the Coombes brothers he also played in another Oxfordshire band – BRITISH ROCK GROUP SUPERGRASS.
CCATNB were formed in 2009 and have been touring ever since. In 2010 they played in Europe and USA, including the SXSW Festival. They also released 2 EPs: their debut “Panic” and second EP “Waves”, both to critical acclaim.
Charly and the band go from strength to strength as 2011 sees a new release later in the year, summer festival appearances, and a major UK tour
Mick Ralphs is one of British rock music's most tasteful and understated guitarists, from the same 'school' as Joe Walsh and Mick Ronson where, thankfully, the mission statement is thought, feel and melody rather than speed. The Fabulous Morons are made up of founding member & current member of Mott the Hoople & Bad Co Mick Ralphs, on guitar and vocals Jim Maving, Bass and backing vocals Dicky Baldwin with Bob Pearce on the drums and as studio engineer.
These guys have played with the likes of Iain Pace, the Everley Brothers, Sonny Curtis , Albert Lee, and many more. A prolific songwriter Mick has been responsible for some monster hits such as Bad Company's "Ready For Love","Can't Get Enough","Good Lovin' Gone Bad","One of the Boys" with Ian Hunter,"Feel Like Making Love" with Paul Rodgers and "Flying Hour" with George Harrison. So we are delighted that Mick and the boys are coming to to rock Rugfest!
Based in the West Midlands of England , but touring all over the world, The Doctor Teeth Big Band fires up a furious stage show the likes of which are rarely seen in these dark, dark days of processed pop and cookie-cutter musical pretenders. Fronted by Chicago-born blues shouter Stephen ”The Doctor” Steinhaus and featuring a blistering 3-piece horn section, the ‘Teeth believe in the relentless pursuit of a good time through the medium of rockin’ blues music. The band took their second swing through the heartland of America in 2007 and, in 2008, have continued an uninterrupted streak of stand-out festival appearances that has taken them across Europe and the UK. Now, having overhauled their sound, look and line-up for 2011, The Teeth stand as living proof that music CAN save your mortal soul and, as musical apostles bringing light to where there was once only dark, leave a healthy dose of life-affirmiin’, genre-bustin’, earth-shakin’ rhythm and jive in their wake.
The Beat Seeking Missiles play garage, beat and surf rock, influenced by amongst others, the Kinks, Who, Stones, Sonics, Captain Beefheart, Link Wray, Dick Dale and Bo Diddley. The band features Mick Quinn (Ex Supergass) plus reknown garage/rocknroll musicians Sir Bald, Kid Wig & Bash Brand (Billy Childish, Holly Golightly, Pretty Things, Link Wray). Debut single 'Break My Fall/Dr Strangelove' out on Dirty Water Records in September
Primitive beats, lyrical bass, virtuoso keyboards, grinding electric guitar, great songs sung by one of the UK's all time acclaimed master singers - this is what you can expect from Jackie Leven's Light Electrique. The only show in Europe this year from this line-up, these guys will be playing songs from the rockier end of Jackie Leven's amazing thirty album output.
Harking from a town where the only two major pastimes are forming bands or drinking, Quadrophobe began life as a culmination of both, but quickly escalated beyond being a minor diversion from the trivialities of small-town day to day life, into an all-consuming song and dance.
Since formation, they have written songs, broken genre taboos, ridden a piano through a small Oxfordshire village, gigged, and pioneered the Jazz Elephant; roughly in that order. Rugfest are just chuffed to small pieces to have the pleasure of Quadrophobe. Richard and the guys have delighted audiences two years running and clearly they are masters of entertainment. With their own insane blend of funk and ska you best have your dancing shoes ready !!!
Since the launch of their critically acclaimed debut EP in December 2010, KILTO TAKE have been moving in the fast lane ever since, garnering a dedicated, international following almost over night. Dubbed as sounding like early U2, Muse, Radiohead, Joy Division and the Cure rolled into one original act, this band certainly hit all the markers for anthemic indie, alternative rock that is both massive ounding, yet powerfully intimate.
Recently KILTO TAKE have headlined the famous Cavern Club, Liverpool and the O2 Academy, Islington as part of a mini tour before heading back into the studio to start work on recording their debut album. This band have been tipped as ones to watch in 2011.
Our Festival opens with the outstanding craftwork of local hero Tom Williams – bringing stunningly crafted guitar work and great vocals Tom transcends genres with heartfelt, soulful acoustic steel and classical guitar, phenomenal blues and a few surprises too – really no better way to start a festival weekend
Blake’s Heaven Big Band, formed in October 2007, consists of some of the best Jazz Musicians in Oxfordshire, and beyond. The compositions are fresh and interesting and the arrangements have been crafted with a new twist, keeping it challenging for the players and entertaining for the audience. As the 21st Century Big Band, Blake’s Heaven delivers thoughtful, high energy, contemporary big band music with the charismatic vocals of Linda Blake in blues, latin, funk, soul, rock and jazz swing styles.
The repertoire appeals to a varied audience with songs from well known artists over the years. The Jazz influence stems from Dave Brubeck, Buddy Rich and, the recent, Gordon Goodwin and GRP All-star big bands. Many of the arrangements have been tailored to feature individual members of Blake’s Heaven Big Band to showcase their innate talents.
The slab came together via a mutual love of (our) guitars and how they sound through our Vox's and Marshalls. Nick, Axe, Cliff and Michael have been playing together on and off for about 10 years. We've got a wide range of influences from Neil Young to Grandaddy, to The Faces and The Smiths and The Decemberists, via a healthy chunk of homegrown story-telling songs, some gentle, some louder, some both, some old some, new. The main idea is four people in a room making good sounds together for the fun of it, playing for people when we get the chance.
Violet Behaviour are an acoustic/indie duo from Buckinghamshire. This will be their third year at Rugfest and we are delighted to welcome them back due to the fantastic performance they gave to us last year. Their music ranges from Taio Cruz and Adele, to Three Doors Down and John Mayer, as well as original songs. After forming in 2008 at the age of 14, the duo have gone from strength to strength and played with a variety of differently styled musicians, styles of music, and venues around the Shires to bring to us music that proves age is no factor. Their delicate, mesmerising style of music will leave you reeling for more.
Band mainstay Darrell Mitchell began performing with The Simpletons, an acoustic duo formed with George Whitfield of renowned folk rockers and festival favourites Pressgang. Darrell wrote Stain on Your Heart for Pressgangs best selling ‘Fire’ album and often played on stage with them; the track still forms part of the bands live set today.
After a self enforced break from performing Darrell returned as a soloist for acoustic gigs during autumn 2007, soon being joined on stage by The Occasional Orchestra, a gathering of various friends and former band members who play all manner of instruments including 12 string guitar, bass guitar, bouzouki, washboard and cajon as well as adding backing vocals.
The Occasional Orchestra released their first album “Japeeza” early summer 2009, The 2nd Occasional Orchestra album, Dust & Satellites, 10 new songs arranged by the band, was released in Summer 2010 with a preview 2 track download single released the previous December via i-tunes and the band have also contributed to two film soundtracks.
The best ever Ginhouse; Alan Weikert with a new rhythm section comprising of Steve Harris on drums and Steve Winchcombe on Bass. Ginhouse have been playing Blues Rock for the last 14 years, appearing at the Blues and Beer Festival Wallingford and numerous venues in the south of England. They have been off the road for a couple of years, just waiting for the right musicians to become available. The band play interpretations of numbers by Rory Gallagher, Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Lynyrd Skynyrd and many more. They are a very experienced powerful band so get ready to rock.
